Stacks. They are the key. "Key to what?", you might ask.
Now...these are NOT the stacks of magazines on your coffee table, or the stack of bills to be paid, or even the stack of laundry in your bedroom (you didn't think I noticed, did you?).
No. These are neatly piled stacks of clothing that make your closet neat, and your fashionable life that much easier. Let me explain.
Noun: A pile of objects, typically one that is neatly arranged: "a stack of boxes".
Verb: Arrange (a number of things) in a pile, typically a neat one: "the books had been stacked up in three piles"
You see, stack is not meant to be the dirty word it has become. And a little neat stacking can go a long way to creating a pleasant, usable, effective space in your closet.
|what cracks me up in these "organized" closets is that the have multiples of the same shirt!|
If you have shelves in your closet, consider yourself blessed, seriously. And you have no excuse. If you do not, there are plenty of options out there for adding a stack-able space. I found this simple one at Target for only $13.99. Perfect.
How do you begin? It depends on
1. what you want to see
2. what you will actually need on a regular basis
3. and what season it is.
And this may seem obvious, slap me if needed, but if you tuck something away in a drawer you can't see it. If you can't see it, you forget that it's there, if you forget that it's there you won't wear it. If you don't wear it, it's a waste. Get it?
So my philosophy is hang it or stack it. And get your fashion on. Let's take a look at my closet "stackables" for example.
It's summer - thank goodness - so there are no sweaters...which I would fold neatly and stack by color. But there are shorts.
Jeans, as you can see I have quite a collection, a wardrobe staple in my opinion. Stack them by kind. Skinny jeans. Colored jeans. Bootcut Jeans.
Another priority for me is workout clothing. So these become stacked by type. Running. Or yoga / pilates.
My work wardrobe is at the top. For me, that consists of jeans too ripped to wear out in public anymore. A necessity for me to grab at everyday, but put in an area I don't need to see for when I "really" get dressed.
Shoes. I am a huge fan of taking your shoes out of the box they came in (unless they are boots) and placing them in plastic boxes. Why? They stack nicely. They keep your closet looking organized. You can truly see what you have. I have begun sticking a small photo on the outside of the box in order to get a easy quick view of the contents. Use your cell phone, take a pic, print it off and stick it on. It's that easy. If you are like me and have a tiny bit of a shoe issue, it's easy to forget what you have. Just sayin.
I am also a fan of baskets. They fit on your shelves and they are a great way to put belts, socks, scarves etc. in a visible place and still have them be easy on the eyes.
And, I took out one hanging rack and added this cute small dresser which hosts my "unmentionables", swimsuits, and winter socks. Lots...of winter socks. Are you beginning to understand my natural aversion to winter?
I realize these are not rocket science steps. But I promise you, it will make getting dressed that much easier. Organization soothes the soul. Ahhhhhhhhhhh.
And this system works great for kids too. Especially if you want them to dress themselves. Trust me on this one, I've been doing it for YEARS!!
So, what will you pull out of your drawer and stack? What steps will you take? Do it now...before that next dreaded season is upon us!
